METABIOME

We have conquered nature. There is not a single inch of the environment that has remained untouched by the forces of human technology. We have hacked into our own genetic code, conquered disease, and extended our lifespans by decades. Every day, new breakthroughs in the life sciences open up new ways to build a sustainable civilization.

And yet we are constantly reminded of the power of nature. Natural disasters and global pandemics remind us how fragile our existence on this planet is. Coastal cities are on the brink of being inundated by the sea. Our own technological arrogance threatens total collapse.

In the program/project METABIOME, Ex-Sentia Ensemble will use instrumental and electronic media to process these paradoxes. Live sound processing and physical feedback systems will explore the recursive networks between organic and mechanistic structures that outline our relationship to the planet and its inhabitants.

In close collaboration with Ex-Sentia, Robin Michel will develop three electroacoustic interludes for the project "METABIOME". Continuing the work already started with "formen" and "Eisfischen", these interludes will further develop and expand the performance possibilities of his devices specially made with 3D printing techniques and Arduino components.

In a new 20-minute work by Stylianos Dimou, this relationship is expressed through the real-time folding and resynthesis of various physical and electronic timbres. Instrumental sounds are realized through physical modeling of natural resonance profiles, creating a symbiosis between the human and electronic components.

A new work by José del Avellanal will use the processing of sounds sampled from nature to open a new space in which this dramaturgy can take place. The inclusion of multicolored lights controlled by the musicians will recall the phenomenon of bioluminescence and add a visual multimedia component.

Finally, a new work by Joshua Alvarez Mastel will illustrate the problems of the Anthropocene, while the introduction of semi-autonomous organisms built with electric circuits will decentralize the role of human actors and merge the technological and biological spheres.
